The Bear earned a LEED Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council; the facility’s sustainability practices include geothermal heating and cooling, passive cooling design, white reflective roofs, and rainwater catchment.
Geothermal
Efficient heat pumps coupled to a geothermal well field west of the
building heat and cool the natatorium.
Rainwater Collection
A cistern collects water from the fieldhouse roof for flushing and
irrigation of Rosenbloom Field.
Heat Recovery
Air-handling equipment uses heat-recovery wheels to transfer heat from
exhausted air to incoming air.
Lighting Controls
The fieldhouse, natatorium, and gymnasium lighting automatically turns off at the building closing time.
