I want to meet people from other places who can help me reach my goals and who I can help to reach theirs.

Marquis "Quis" Sullivan, 2021 Laurel Scholar

A top ranking ‘A’ student taking the most advanced classes offered at his school, Marquis loves learning and discussing ideas. He earned the Global Glimpse Scholarship and traveled to Panama to conduct global warming research. He is described as a “very inquisitive, determined and resilient student” who “advocates for his own learning” and “has modeled the Urban Prep Creed: Exceptional, not because he says it, but because he works hard at it.” The dean at his school said Marquis is, “humble in receiving advice, and diligent when given direction” and someone with exceptional leadership skills.

A middle linebacker, Marquis was captain of his football team and academic athlete of the year, playing for a team that won the conference title four years in a row. Although injured in high school while playing football and not yet certain if he wants to play in college, he explained, “I see myself as a team player; I like to step in at just the right moment when people around me need support. I want to meet people from other places who can help me reach my goals and who I can help to reach theirs.” His school’s champion chess player, Marquis has pursued a variety of activities in service to his community. He has worked with Urban Planning in Chicago to look for ways to help communities become stronger, was a research apprentice for the University of Illinois-Chicago Virtual Food and Science Research Team, was a four-year participant in Upward Bound, and conducted research on urban planning to identify ways to strengthen communities in Chicago. He plans to major in history.
