The student and I read four detective novels that I teach in SPN 314 and SPN 385. Using the novels as data sources, we then created several digital maps using Carto and Google Maps software, along with additional data sets including real-world economic and demographic data. These maps were then tailored to the classroom with the addition of templates that students can fill while reading the novels. This will allow students to easily create their own digital maps and incorporate them into their final research projects for the above mentioned classes. Timothy J. Rogers Summer Dissertation Fellowship May 2013 Indiana University, Bloomington, IN Provides a stipend for summer research and is very selective. Recipients are chosen based on satisfactory progress on the dissertation, a sample of written chapters, and letters of recommendation from faculty. Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award 2012 Indiana University, Bloomington, IN This is the most prestigious award given by Indiana University for distinguished teaching by graduate students. Four recipients from the entire university are selected each year, after being nominated as the top candidates in their respective departments. The award recognizes graduate student instructors that have a profound impact on students both in and out of the classroom, as well as those that make a significant and positive contribution to their programs, departments, degrees, and curricula. The very rigorous application process is focused on teaching development such as syllabi created, supervisor classroom observations, student evaluations, and several letters of recommendation from both faculty and undergraduates.
